Why Most Diets Fail

By: Debi Darline

Most diets are not effective in controlling weight over the long term. When dieting you may get a temporary weight loss but you are 95% more likely to regain the weight you lost after you stop the diet. Not only will you ultimately gain more weight but also progressively have more difficulty in losing the weight again. As most of you know this is called the Yo Yo effect.

I know we all deny the fact that we never regain all the weight back, much less gain more fat than we had before. But in reality we do, it's FACT, black and white, period! Please let me explain.

There is a valid scientific reason why most of the diet fails. Humans originated about 200,000 years ago. The body has a defense mechanism to protect itself from starvation. As soon as the body detects a food shortage, this defense mechanism starts to kick in. This causes the body to assume that the shortage will last so it will reprogram the body systems to change. Theses changes occur in the metabolism, hormonal productions, and psychological systems. The body's reaction cannot be stopped; it hard wired as self preservation.

Theses changes consist of decreased metabolism, loss of muscle, increasing the fat storing enzymes & hormones and reduce the fat burning enzymes & hormones. Also it will cause the body to decrease the thyroid output, increase the appetite, decreases your energy levels, and affect your mind responses. Think about your normal work day, it's about 3 o'clock, your hungry, you just can't seem to get enough energy to get to the office across the building and your just brain just tanked! We need energy and the body will begin to use it energy storage

The body fat burning process doesn't work the way we would like it to work. Our bodies will not burn today's lunch and breakfast first. It wills however burn a little of the breakfast then store the rest of breakfast, the midmorning snack and most of lunch as fat!

When the body is triggers into what is called Starvation Response mode, it begins to look for a ways to conserve energy. Muscle is the number 1 burner of energy, so getting rid of some of the muscle will reduce energy consumption. This reduction involves all muscle groups, including your heart. A calorie deficit is the only way to loss, fat. This means on an average you must burn more calories than you consume in any given day. There are two way to create a calorie deficit.

1) Decreasing the amount of calories you ingest. 2) Increase the amount of calories your burn.

Do not starve yourself by following a low calorie diet, but instead reduce your calories by just a little amount, say 500 calories a day. To carefully burn fat, you must exercise. The more your exercise the more muscle mass you will have. The more muscle the more calories are needed for those muscles. This method is the best way to burn fat and keeps it off. Just because you are increasing your lean muscle mass does not mean you are bulking up.

Eating more of the right kinds of food and exercise to burn off the fat is the healthiest way for you to control your weight. Exercise, unlike dieting will help you lose the fat without losing muscle or slow down your metabolism. Eating the right kinds of food will not only give your body the vitamins and minerals it will speed up your metabolism, causing you to loss more weight. It's the Win Win Game!

Exercising, consisting of cardio and strength training plus nutrition, with exponentially increase your results!
